The Daily Dozen – An App You Must Try!
This is too good not to share.
I have a new favourite free App – the Daily Dozen. I’ve been using it for the past few weeks and it has been great at helping guide what I eat, my activity, and what I supplement each day.
It is designed for plant-based eating but I would recommend this App to anyone, no matter what dietary regime you follow, as it really has the capacity to improve your eating habits.
The Daily Dozen App, devised by Dr. Greger, helps you track your consumption of eleven specific categories of food, plus a category for exercise and supplements. You get to log your items every single day so you can live an optimally healthy life!
The Daily Dozen categories include:
- Beans
- Berries
- Other Fruits
- Cruciferous Vegetables
- Greens
- Other Vegetables
- Flaxseeds
- Nuts & Seeds
- Spices
- Whole Grains
- Beverages
- Exercise
- Vitamin D
- Vitamin B12
Features of the App
This amazing free App is available for iPhone or Android. It is so easy-to-use, and features a list of categories and the recommended number of serves you should aim for each day. You can click on any of the categories to see what constitutes a serving size and get recommendations on simple ways to get a serving.
You can set notifications so you get friendly reminders throughout the day to log your consumption – I find this feature particularly helpful as my notifications usually chime around lunch- and dinner-time so I get a gentle reminder to add a few additional items to the menu so I can tick a few more boxes.
I will admit that in the past few weeks there have only been a handful of days that I have ticked all 24 boxes, but most days I come pretty close. Every time you log in you can easily see how many of your servings you have ticked for the day, so you can constantly assess your daily goal progress.
Click the little calendar icon on each category, and an overview of how you have progressed over the month for any chosen category item, is displayed.
The Daily Dozen App integrates so well with everything else Dr. Greger puts out there, and you can subscribe to Dr. Greger, or link straight through to his video of the day, through the settings feature.
The Doctor behind the App
Dr. Greger has devoted his life to scientific research surrounding nutrition and healthy eating. He is an advocate for plant-based eating as that is where all the research is headed.
Michael Greger, MD, FACLM, arrived at a list of what he considers the most important foods to include in a healthy daily diet. Yes, greens are good for you, but how much should we try to eat each day? The Daily Dozen details the healthiest foods and how many servings of each we should try to check off every day.
Dr. Greger explains his rationale for the Daily Dozen categories in his book How Not to Die. All proceeds from his books, DVDs, and speaking engagements are all donated to charity. NutritionFacts.org is a non-commercial, nonprofit, science-based public service provided by Dr. Greger, providing free daily updates on the latest in nutrition research via bite-sized videos (which you can easily link to via the App). He has nearly a thousand videos on every aspect of healthy eating, with new videos and articles uploaded every day. Like this App, everything on the website is both free of ads and free of charge.
Finally, a big call out to John Slavick, the volunteer who developed this App. Good job!
I urge you to download the App and give it a go – it will change your life!
