How To Find Your Local Farmers’ Markets
I love a good Farmers’ Market!
They are full of fresh, delicious produce, tasty treats, and fresh air. We are pretty lucky here in Perth to have quite a list of markets to choose from. They are really starting to become the preferred way to shop. And, why wouldn’t they!?!
I love that you get to speak with people who actually have some connection to the food you are purchasing, and that my kids get to enjoy taste tests as we go around. I also love the feeling that you are a little closer to nature, rather than shopping under the harsh supermarket lights and looking at all the food in neat little packages.
I have also found that buying from the Farmers’ Markets is a lot cheaper than the supermarket, although it can take a couple of attempts to know what to buy from whom.
For example, I was able to purchase the following:
This haul includes:
1/4 pumpkin
3 sweet potatoes
12 flat mushrooms
1 super size zucchini
1 bunch asparagus
1 bag of the reddest tomatoes I have seen in ages
1 bag carrots
3 red onions
ginger knob
2 avocado
1 red chilli
1 spray free bunch of kale
1 spray free broccoli
1 spray free cauliflower
1 mango
4 Nashi pears
6 broad bean pods
2 super sized leeks
9 bananas
1 bunch celery!!
Total cost: $44.50
The equivalent purchase from a larger supermarket chain was $61.80, although I will note that spray-free options were not available at the supermarket, and the size/quality of the produce did not seem equivalent which suggests the saving is underestimated.
You will also find produce you may not have seen before (like these purple cauliflower) which can help encourage kids to get involved, and to eat it when you pop it on their plate. #winning.
