Must See Netflix Documentaries for Plant Based Eating
Oh, how I love Netflix. It’s hard to remember a time when we only had 4 tv stations to watch although I’m sure I have a vague memory of it in there somewhere. My daughter is actually learning about that era at school in history class. Can you believe it? Tonight at dinner when we asked her what she learned today she said she was learning about the 1980s. To which I replied, “oh you must mean the 1800s”. We then went on to clarify that she did, in fact, mean the 1980s and in that very moment my brain suddenly realised my true age.
Anyway, fortunately, we no longer live in the 80s with just 4 tv stations to choose from. These days we have Netflix, and the choices are endless. There are many pluses to having Netflix, one of my favourites though is having access to a heap of documentaries that will give you insight into what is really going on in our health, pharmaceutical, and agricultural industries. These documentaries will open your mind and help move you towards making a positive change in your life towards better health.
So where should you start?
1. What The Health
What The Health is the place we recommend most people start when they are considering a plant based diet. It has been touted as “the health film that health organisations don’t want you to see” because it exposes the relationships between the government, animal agriculture and pharmaceutical companies. This film also exposes the impact of eating meat and dairy on our health.
This one is definitely an eye opener and you will never blindly purchase anything ever again. It will encourage you to stand up and say “no more”, and to take back control of your own health and to move towards a plant based diet to ensure you are able to live a long and healthy life.

2. Forks Over Knives
The feature film Forks Over Knives examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting animal-based and processed foods.
This film delves into the work of Dr Caldwell Esselstyn and nutritional biochemistry professor T. Colin Campbell, who state that certain diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease can be prevented by consuming a plant-based diet and avoiding processed and animal-based food.

3. Cowspiracy
Cowspiracy is one for those who want to know more about the agricultural impact of the food we eat. This documentary was exec-produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and will have a massive impact on you. Most people simply don’t know what really goes on and what that means for our future. Many also don’t want to believe it, but this documentary will really hit home.
This was a crowd funded documentary.

4. Okja
Okja puts a really gentle spin on the powerful message that we need to change our ways, making it a great option for the whole family. This film (not a documentary), is focused on a friendship between a young girl and her ‘super pig’ named Okja.

5. Food Inc
This documentary focusses on how food consumption has changed over 50 years and investigates how the meat industry is adopting more and more questionable methods to meet demand. The film is broken into 3 segments; the first examining the industrial production of meat, the second looking at the industrial production of grains and vegetables, and the third examining the economic and legal power of corporations including food labelling regulations, the heavy use of petroleum-based chemicals and the promotion of unhealthy food habits.
This film was nominated for several awards including an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2009.

7. Earthlings
Be warned, this one will likely make you Vegan overnight. The scenes are nothing short of horrific and you will be left feeling emotional and raw, and the very worst part of it is that it features huge amounts of real footage.
This documentary is narrated by Joaquin Phoenix and documents humankind’s complete economic dependence on animals raised for pets, food, clothing, entertainment, and scientific research. It uses real hidden camera footage to document the day-to-day practices of the largest industries in the world which all rely on animals for profit.
