First, choose the liquid
If you fancy a creamy, milky smoothie you should select a plant-based milk as your base or water with raw nuts. Alternatively, you might want a refreshing, fruity smoothie so you’d use juice, or water and fruit, as your base. Coconut water is also a tasty liquid on which to build your perfect smoothie.
Secondly, make your smoothie cold
Frozen fruit is ideal, and it is super easy to have an endless supply of fruit at the ready in your freezer. Make sure you buy some bagged frozen berries, mango and avocado from the frozen section at the supermarket. If you have fruit at home that has started to over ripen (that no-one will eat and looks destined for the compost), then cut it up and place in the freezer for smoothies. And bananas – ALWAYS have frozen bananas in the freezer – just remember to remove the skins before freezing as you can’t remove the skins when they are frozen. Smoothies are also great with blended ice so give that a try too.
Lastly, add the flavour and texture you desire
To thicken your smoothie try adding oats, chia seeds, coconut yogurt, flax seeds, nuts, avocado or plant-based protein powder. To add flavour try things like cacao, dried fruit, nut butters (especially peanut butter), coffee shot, spices (like cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger), maca or mesquite powder, or vanilla bean extract.
Optional extras
Depending on your personal taste you might like to add some sweetness with a dash of maple syrup, agave, stevia or Medjool dates.
Vegetables like spinach leaves, kale and avocado can add to the flavour and certainly deliver on the nutrition stakes. Often you can add these vegetables unbeknown to your family, so this can be a sneaky way to get more vegetable serves into their diet.
Smoothie bowls
A Smoothie Bowl is a smoothie that is created a little thicker and served in a bowl. These are delicious and allow you to add some other toppings for nutrition, taste, and texture. Try some of the following in your smoothie bowls: nuts, coconut, cacao nibs, muesli or granola, sliced fruit (banana, mango, apples, peaches), berries (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, cherries), and seeds (flax, chia, pepitas, sunflower, sesame, hemp). Kids love to get creative with decorating the smoothie bowls, which means they get to participate in their food preparation, so be sure to get them involved.
